The Dr. Harley E. French Papers contains correspondence, pamphlets and miscellaneous items relating to medicine in North Dakota. The first addition to the Dr. Harley E. French Papers contains forty-five date books with recordings of appointments, meetings, weather conditions, etc. The books run from 1917 to 1961. The second addition to the Dr. Harley E. French Papers consists of several publications written by French, as well as grade books from his first year Anatomy course, 1923-1964. Also included is a scrapbook documenting his life, as compiled by his daughter, Mary Margaret Frank. The third addition to the Dr. Harley E. French Papers consists of four letters written in 1953 between Dr. Harley French and Edwin B. Stevens of Seattle, Washington regarding the administration of Thomas F. Kane as President of the University of North Dakota. The fourth addition consists of miscellaneous documents including general university and high school commencements, meetings of the North Dakota Medical Association, and programs from various North Dakota organizations.

Harley Ellsworth French was born in Delphi, Indiana, on December 7, 1873. He was one of eight children born to David (also known as Charles) and Mina (Fischer) French. He was educated in the public schools of Kearney, Nebraska, and Palouse, Washington. After graduation from Palouse High School, he attended Spokane College, as well as the University of Idaho. He taught in rural schools in Washington and Idaho. He graduated from Washington State College in Pullman, Washington, in 1902, with a B.A....
